From Idea to Adoption

In September 2024, Jeremy Howard (Answer.AI / fast.ai) proposed a simple idea: a markdown file at the site root describing content structure for language models. The idea resonated.

By March 2026, llms.txt is used by Anthropic, Cloudflare, Stripe, Vercel, and thousands of other sites. Adoption exceeded 10% among 300,000 analyzed domains.

Key Milestones

  • September 2024 — first specification published
  • December 2024 — 500+ sites with llms.txt
  • March 2025 — generators available for all popular CMS
  • 2026 — 10%+ adoption, integration with IDEs and AI assistants
