llms.txt in WordPress

How to get llms.txt on a WordPress site - what Yoast SEO, All in One SEO, Rank Math and a dedicated plugin can do, how they differ, what to check after switching it on, and what to do about structured data

The facts come from the plugins’ own pages. Capabilities change between releases: check the description of the current version before installing.

Do not run two plugins that both create llms.txt. There is one address, and one component should serve it.

Most files on the web exist not because an owner decided so, but because a plugin or a platform switched the feature on. That explains why many of them were never checked.

  1. Update the SEO plugin to the current version.
  2. Find the llms.txt section in its settings and enable the feature.
  3. If the plugin allows it, choose which post types go into the file: pages, posts, products.
  4. Exclude service pages: cart, account, thank-you pages, search results.
  5. Open https://your-site/llms.txt in a browser.

If the site uses a caching plugin or a CDN, purge the cache after enabling. Otherwise the old “not found” page may keep answering at the file address for a while.

  1. /llms.txt answers 200 and serves text, not the theme’s HTML page.
  2. The file has the site name and a short summary, not only a list of posts.
  3. The list has no service pages, drafts or private sections.
  4. Links point to working addresses on the same protocol and domain as the site.
  5. The file refreshes after a new post is published.
  6. robots.txt does not block the file.
  7. The site has no second source of llms.txt: another plugin or a manually uploaded file.

Detailed checks and commands: Validating files and markup.

A plugin knows the structure of a site but not what matters on it. A typical automatic file is the complete list of posts in publication order.

A good map is built differently: a few sections by meaning, each with the most important material and a note. If the plugin lets you edit the summary and the sections, use that.

What a considered file looks like: best practices, examples.

SEO plugins print Schema.org markup with no extra setup: WebSite, Organization, Article, breadcrumbs. Store plugins add Product with price and availability.

Three things are worth checking:

  • Whether the organization card is filled. The plugin takes the name, logo and contacts from settings; it does not guess them.
  • Whether the theme duplicates the plugin’s markup. Two markups of one product make two conflicting descriptions.
  • Whether the price in the markup matches the price on the page, especially with discount modules.

Which markup is needed and how to check it: Structured data and JSON-LD.

What is known and what is not

Confirmed

  • Major SEO plugins create llms.txt automatically.
  • Yoast itself writes that the file is not meant for search engines.
  • Google and Yandex read the Schema.org markup these plugins print.

Not proven

  • That enabling the feature will affect rankings or citations.

What it does not mean

  • A plugin does not decide what matters on the site: that stays with the owner.

A plugin removes manual work. It does not make the file more useful.

A sober view of the format: Does llms.txt work.
